Our goal at The Carpenter’s Sons Academic Fund is to provide scholarships to Western Washington high school graduates that have been affected by familial alcohol or substance use. Our vision is to support young people in pursuit of their academic dreams in healthcare and trade through the provision of academic funds and the promotion of responsible drinking habits.

Our goal is to be an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes health literacy surrounding the topics of alcohol- and substance-use. We aspire to promote responsible drinking habits within our communities on the Olympic Peninsula.

The Facts:

In Jefferson and Clallam Counties:

  • 48% of driving deaths in Clallam county and 36% of all driving deaths in Jefferson county involve alcohol impairment (CHR&R).

  • 22% of adults in Jefferson county and 20% of adults in Clallam county report excessive drinking (CHR&R).

Statewide:

  • In Washington state, the 5-year average annual rate of excessive alcohol deaths per capita in Washington increased by as much as 42.8% from 2015 to 2019. Over half of Americans increased their alcohol consumption during COVID-19 lockdowns. (NCDAS).

  • Drug-caused deaths involving opioids increased 190% statewide between 2020-2022 (UWADAI).

Nationwide:

  • Throughout the United States, Approximately 10.5% (7.5 million) of U.S. children ages 17 and younger live with a parent who has alcohol use disorder (SAMHSA, 2017a).

  • 13.9% of children residing in two-parent households lived with at least one parent who had a past year Substance-use disorder, and 8.4% of children residing in single-parent households lived with a parent who had an Substance-use disorder. (SAMHSA, 2017B).

Among minority groups:

  • Alcohol is the main substance used by native populations. Native Americans and Alaska Natives start drinking and using other substances at a younger age than do members of other major racial or ethnic groups. Early use of substances has been linked with greater risk for developing substance use disorders (SAMHSA, 2018).

  • Research indicates that adults who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual are nearly twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a substance use disorder, and transgender individuals are nearly 4 times as likely to have a substance use disorder compared to their cisgender counterparts (CDC, 2016;NAMI).
